Directional boring is a term used to describe methods of boring through the surface of the earth without going straight vertically. Directional boring is applied in many fields and in varying degrees of magnitude depending on the individual project. On a small scale, directional boring is used in installing underground utilities with minimal interruptions and damage on the ground surface. Directional boring is the alternative to digging trenches. It offers a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative to digging trenches. It enables constructors to install underground pipes, conduits, and cables without disrupting the environment. On a large scale, it is used in the mining industry and extraction of underground minerals such as oil.

Directional boring may take many forms depending on factors such as scale, landscape, and nature of the work. Different methods such as multilateral, horizontal, and extended reach drilling (ERD), are used in oil enhanced oil recovery (EOR) to increase the production of a downhole. Such methods enable specialists to drill more than 10.2 kilometers safely (per drillers.com). These methods ensure there is a steady flow of oil from the mines to meet the ever-increasing demand for oil. These methods enable people to penetrate even the hard limestone surfaces that usually cover the oil mines. It reduces the environmental impact of oil mining as few interruptions are made on the earth’s surfaces.

The Benefits

Over the last century, directional boring has continually improved and the ability to make turns underground have continually been developed. Carefully developed turns are programmed into the system to enable the drilling to take place even in the stiffest situations. Without directional drilling, many projects would either be rendered impossible or the costs of such projects would multiply exponentially. The precision of this method is dependent on factors such as the skill of the navigators, guidance software, proper setup, and the steering tool.

Underground formations occur in different forms. Geologists argue that mother nature does not always arrange the underground resources in a way that is most convenient to man. Oil reservoirs are shaped in different forms that vertical drilling cannot achieve maximum yield. Horizontal boring not only helps miners get the most out of these reservoirs but also increases the accuracy of getting the oil reserve. Oil reserves may occur in different pockets that can be connected through one drilling bore instead of multiple vertical bores. Directional boring is an indispensable part of today’s mining and construction industries.
